The proposed closure of 6 Music is preposterous. Radio 6 is the only place to listen to new alternative music. It's a democratic space that welcomes all kinds of music, and it belongs to us. We pay almost 3.5 billion pounds a year and we should be able to have a say on what should be axed - certainly not BBC Radio 6.

This is brilliant, BBC cannot axe Radio 6!

We love 6 music. Absolutely enjoy the company of the radio station when we do our sunday lunches, painting the walls…
That’s why we launched the website http://www.saveradio6.com to start the Earmuff Campaign to have our voices heard that “Save 6 music – we don’t want to hear anything else”.
Please please take part and upload your photos with hands over ears in protest. Go to “the gallery” page to see what other people are doing.
Tell as many people as possible. Together we can do it!

The BBC wanting to shut it down is just typical of the closed thinking that we have come to expect from such a corporation. I’ve been turned on to so much new stuff through the medium and the presenters are passionate about their music rtaher than their egos.

We need a station like 6 Music. Sure 6 music does draw the audience like Radio 1 or other middle of the road radio stations. But can we please have some quality and something else to listen to than what is normally stuffed down to throat of the listener.

Are the BBC nuts? I thought the Beeb was all about providing a service for everyone – not just mainstream and middle of the road music lovers.

6 Music is the ONLY station worth listening to, that represents new and alternative music, from signed and unsigned artists. Axe this and the radio will be following the TV set down to the local charity shop.

I’m very concerned to hear that 6 Music may shut down as it plays high-quality rock/pop music that other stations don’t. Surely this is in line with the BBC strategy? Please reconsider BBC!

6 Music is the best and only thing worth listening to on digital radio – unless of course all you want to listen to is mindless dribble and x factor winners. Please BBC keep the station open, it is a platform for new unsigned talent with presenters who actually know what they are talking about.

6 music is the sole reason I bought a digital radio back in 2003.
I listen to it all day at work and when I come home the first thing I do is switch it on in the kitchen.
For me, there is no alternative listening option. There is no other station like it in the world. The diverse quality of music, new and old is unrivalled and the presenters are (mostly) entertaining, friendly familiar voices. Please reconsider and ditch BBC3 or Radio 7 instead.
Said by Kerr Vernon — March 9, 2010 @ 10:28 am
Do not Axe BBC6 Music
Said by Anna Hunt — March 9, 2010 @ 2:27 pm
Save 6music. Find space on the FMbandwave audience numbers will increase. 6music was one of the reasons why i bought DAB. Minus one Jonathon Ross salary equals running costs for one year.
Its a great music station.
Said by andy carleton — March 9, 2010 @ 3:09 pm
Radio 6 music needs to stay. There isn’t a commercial alternative that I can find.
Said by David Marshall — March 9, 2010 @ 3:35 pm
6 Music is the best radio station bar none. It is special because it plays such a diverse range of musical styles and genres that no other radio station can compete with. It appeals to what I term the real music enthusiast which I believe I am. The DJ’s are also music enthusiasts and their knowledge and passion shines through e.g. Mark Riley, Tom Robinson and Huey. The other radio stations including Radio 1 and Radio 2 are fine for what they do, catering for the mainstream and periphery, for the young and the not so young. This radio station could not exist anywhere else, only the BBC can do this. It is a Radio station paid for by the people for the real music loving people. It provides a platform for new talent as well as older more established artists who tend to get forgotten about on other radio stations. I also love the fact that there is a mixture of live music with sessions throughout the day.
I am also staggered that the BBC has been plugging Digital music for years and now wants to pull the plug on its flagship digital station. It just does not make sense. I would also like to see the Asian station saved as although I do not listen to it, it provides a service to a minority community. Again only the BBC can provide this service and to take it away is unfair to these licence paying people.
Said by Pete Strange — March 9, 2010 @ 6:47 pm
Couldn’t quite believe it when i heard that 6 Music may be axed from the BBC schedule. I understand that we live in ’straightened’ times however i sincerely hope that the BBC review the decision extremely seriously; Radio6 is a real gem & has re-ignited my interest in new & existing music as it has done for so many other listeners.
I cannot think of another radio station where such a variety of such important & interesting music is played, as well as having some extremely talented, knowledgable & genuinely funny presenters (sadly Jon Richardson has already left the station).
Do not let Radio6 disappear, it is irreplaceable.

Said by Martin Steinmetz — March 9, 2010 @ 8:58 pm
BBC 6 is one of the few quality radio programs out there. If the BBC are looking to “maintain quality not quantity”, by axing 6 music, they are truley missing the point.
Said by Keith Johnston — March 10, 2010 @ 6:44 am
Why can savings not be made elsewhere? The product on BBC Three is absurd. I’m raising my daughter on a diet of Radio 4 and 6 Music, socially aware and culturally informed, to help cultivate a sense of art with some intellectual pride. If you want to kill a radio station kill Radio 1, your bean counters don’t listen to that one either, the only difference is we would all be better off without the corporate cookie cutter production line of banality that is that station.
It may seem a subjective point of view to you but really it’s not. 6 Music is the only station playing music for people who really like music. Music for people who want to hear what is ‘up and coming’ as well as great tracks from the past, who go and support artists, remember them? What they were once like?
6 Music listeners are not interested in ‘artists’ who sell Pepsi Cola products or McDonald’s products, ‘Music that matters’ is what 6 Music is for and the BBC Trust wants to kill it?
BBC Trust = FAIL
Said by jeremy raymond — March 10, 2010 @ 2:12 pm
This is so disappointing. why get rid of 6 music and still put drivel like Eastenders on (seemingly) every minute of the day?
I’ve very cross about this…
Said by Stuart Gibbins — March 10, 2010 @ 3:48 pm
Do not axe 6 music – it is the only place to listen to all sorts of new music which isn’t formulaic, commercial pop for the x-factor generation.
Just because something sells lots of records doesn’t mean that more people like it and certainly doesn’t mean that less people detest it.
Said by Rob McManus — March 10, 2010 @ 4:56 pm
I hope this is all just a cunning plan although I doubt it… 6 MUSIC MUST STAY!
Said by Olly McWilliams — March 13, 2010 @ 12:46 am
6 Music is the best station on the airwaves. It plays quality music and has ecellent djs. There is no other station out there as good, where else can you hear ‘Perfect Day’ first thing in the morning. It plays a variety of music -all other stations seem to play from a very limited sound track.
Don’t close it down!
Said by Ann Kelly — March 14, 2010 @ 1:01 pm
6music offers a unique service in providing new and popular music in a way that no other bbc or other commercial radio or tv channel does.
Radio 1 is not for listeners in their 30s, nor does Radio 2 put music at the front of their service offering.
If 6music were promoted across the BBC’s other services in the same way that BBC3 was then it would be adopted by far more music fans across the UK (and further afield).
Save 6Music.
Said by Anna Mawhinney — March 15, 2010 @ 1:57 pm
Who else would play the musc that the likes of Marc Riley, Huey Morgan and Jarvis Cocker do? Who, come on you muppets, who?
No-one, that’s who. I spent ten hours the other day in my garden office being inflicted with local radio by next doors builders…God help us if this is all we have to look forward to. These stations won’t play Stereolab, Nick Drake, Broadcast, Frank Zappa, North Sea Radio Orchestra, Howling Bells, Shelagh MacDonald….need I go on? Well I will anyway – I picked these out as all were introduced to me by the wonders of 6 Music and broadened my musical horizons beyond all imagination.
To lose 6 Music would be an insult to intelligent and thought provoking music. The Beeb is wonderful but this is an own goal of massive proportions.
Oh and btw, what’s the point of plugging and promoting digital to then remove the one music station on there that does something truly unique?
Sort it out fellas, you’re way off target with this one.

I’m a licence fee payer and I want my fee money spent on Radio 6.
I DO NOT want to listen to mind numdingly bland chart music for kids all day long and I am not ready for slippers and a pipe so Radio 2 is out!
Said by MattB — March 19, 2010 @ 9:39 am
If the future BBC policy is to avoid competing with commercial stations.. why the hell keep Radio 2? No offence to Mark Radcliffe and Noddy Holder, but otherwise there are at least 3 other FM stations in my area aimed at the same audience, One other aimed at Radio 1’s (mostly dance), And nothing outside London that competes with 6music.
Said by R Sutherland — March 21, 2010 @ 1:08 am
This is such an important station and the only one worth listening to for a swathe of music lovers disenchanted with the mass offerings on other commercial stations and even BBC’s other radio stations. It is also vital as a showcase for new talent which is crucial to keeping Britain at the forefront of the world’s music scene. Plus, I’m not sure I can face Sunday evenings without Guy Garvey…

Said by jon beckley — March 22, 2010 @ 10:30 am
6 Music is vital part of BBC radio and promotes more creativity than Radio 1 or 2. a platform and a forum for music that does not just feed on and fuel the mass media hype, nor is purely driven by charts, dance, hype or pleasing the middle of the road.
Losing this station would be a massive shame for new music.

I love radio 6, and in fairness, only found out about because of it being threatened with closure. Since then I’ve become a daily listener, especially enjoying hearing tunes that haven’t been repeated a dozen times a day on all the other stations, BBC and commercial alike. This channel is a breath of fresh air amongst the dross that permeates the airwaves these days.
Please make sure it doesn’t get washed away under the tide of corporate sponsored bubblegum rinsing out our eardrums!!

6 Music — the best music radio station in the UK!
Said by Simon Pritchard — May 7, 2010 @ 8:32 am
BBC Radio 6 is so needed- great programming of quality new and old indy/alterntative music. I had almost stopped listening to popular music stations in recent years as I was fed up with the bland teen pop programming, repetitive charts, inane chat, jingles, phone-ins and/or adverts. My discovery of R6 on buying a DAB radio has been a revelation and I am now tuned to it almost constantly- it is brilliant and I am discovering so much new music that I like. There really is nothing like it so *please* don’t close it!
It is exactly the sort of ‘minority’ quality music station the BBC should be supporting, not closing. Having lived in other countries including the USA I can honestly say it is a rare treasure to have a station like this.
Please go to the BBC site and make your views known in the consultation survey if you have not already done so- we may still be able to stop this.
